NFL Rumors: Blockbuster Deal Coming From Browns & Panthers

The Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns have held trade discussions in the past couple of weeks and a deal surrounding quarterback Baker Mayfield appears to be close to completion. The Browns already went out this offseason and acquired Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans, in a move that admittedly pissed off Mayfield. A move is now expected and according to Mark Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the Panthers have the inside track.

After never being able to get over the hump, Mayfield appears to be on his way out of the Dog Pound. He's been subject to trade rumors all offseason and the Browns had recently also been in contact with the Seattle Seahawks regarding a move. To this point the Panthers are further along in talks.

Carolina is looking to make a splash after a horrible end to last season. For now, Sam Darnold appears to be their starter if the season started today but the organization reportedly sees Mayfield as an upgrade. There's also been speculation the Panthers are taking a QB early at the 2022 NFL Draft. Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer had this to say about his top selection:

But we do need a quarterback, and at some point you have to take a shot, especially in the top 10. You hate to force it, because when you force it, you could make a mistake.

Mayfield was the first overall pic at the 2018 draft and is coming off an injury-filled season. The 27-year-old veteran is in the final season of his rookie contract and owns a 29-30 career record.
