Chargers Sign Star Safety to Record Deal

The deal makes him the highest-paid safety in NFL history.

The Los Angeles Chargers are signing safety Derwin James to a four-year extension, worth $19.1 million annually, including $42 million guaranteed.

The safety is only twenty-six years old and has already earned two 1st-Team All-Pro selections.

Minkah Fitzpatrick was the former highest-paid safety in the NFL, earning $18.4 million annually.

James finished last season with 75 solo tackles, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and five passes defended.

James will now practice after he had been holding in due to contract talks. The $29 million he receives in year one is also a record.
