Seattle Seahawks Name Starting QB

The Seattle Seahawks were one of the few teams that used this pre-season to find their starting QB for 2022, and after 10 years of starting Russell Wilson, the battle between Geno Smith and Drew Lock certainly seems underwhelming on the surface. Both have played well in their game-time and in practice so far this pre-season however, but as of today, the Seahawks have named journeyman Geno Smith their starting QB.

The former West Virginia star has been in the league for a decade now, and this starting job will be his first genuine opportunity to lead the team since the Jets way back on his rookie deal, and given the weapons around him, he should be primed to have a much better performance this time around as a starter. Wilson has ben the QB for the past 10-years in Seattle, and while Smith isn't at that level, he certainly shares some traits with Russ, and could convert this into success in the Seattle system.

Most people believe that this is just a stop-gap year for Seattle, who'll look at a young QB over next off-season to take them forward, but for right now, Geno could be the man to lead this team to a few wins in 2022. They likely aren't going to the playoffs, but for a veteran like Smith, this is a good chance to prove himself and that he belongs in the NFL as a starter, so don't be surprised if he plays very well over the coming 17 games.

Seattle traded for Lock in the Wilson deal, and while it was never assumed he'd be the starter, it must be disappointing to go from Denver to Seattle and not get a starting job. Either way, anything can happen in the NFL, and as of right now, former New York Jet Geno Smith gets the start in Seattle for their Week 1 matchup with their former QB Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos.
