NFL Rumors: Jets Quarterback Wilson Won't Return Until He Regains Confidence

The New York Jets stunned the NFL landscape this week by dramatically benching their young quarterback Zach Wilson ahead of their Week 12 matchup with the Chicago Bears. Apparently, it could be a while before fans see the second-overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft again. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Jets will not start Wilson again until he regains his confidence.

The Jets benched Wilson for today's game following a disastrous outing against the New England Patriots in Week 11. The second-year passer netted a miserable 44 passing yards on 26 dropbacks in the 10-3 defeat. He was similarly disappointing in a Week 9 matchup with the Patriots, throwing three interceptions in a 22-17 loss. They're Wilson's only two losses of the season.

Reports emerged earlier in the week that Wilson had been dealing with the yips since the offseason, and that bears out in his numbers this year. Wilson has averaged a middling 5.63 net yards per attempt and 182.7 passing yards per game this season in his seven starts. The Jets are 6-4 this year despite him.

It will likely take some abysmal play from one or both of the Jets' other two quarterbacks for Wilson to see the field again this year. The Jets elected to start Mike White in his stead this week with Joe Flacco serving as backup.
