Denver Broncos to Hire Vance Joseph as DC

The Denver Broncos are reuniting with their former head coach. Per NFL Network's Peter Schrager, the team will hire Vance Joseph as its new defensive coordinator.

Joseph coached the Arizona Cardinals defense from 2019 to 2022 to middling success, finishing 31st in points allowed last year and no better than 12th across his four seasons. Before landing the job in Arizona, he was head coach of the Broncos from 2017 to 2018, where he compiled an 11-21 record. He also served as defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2016, a year in which they allowed the third-most yards in the league and ranked 18th in points allowed.

Joseph was let go by the Cardinals last week and has been in demand ever since. He interviewed with the NFC Conference champion Philadelphia Eagles for their defensive coordinator opening and even interviewed for the Cardinals' head coaching vacancy. His resume lacks meaningful success, but he has abundant experience and is well-established in league circles. Though he has yet to flirt with greatness, he may benefit from inheriting a talent-laden Broncos defense: they finished seventh in yards allowed in 2022.
