NFL Rumors: Green Bay Packers and New York Jets at Impasse in Rodgers Trade

The Green Bay Packers and New York Jets are hammering out the details of a blockbuster trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but they've apparently hit an impasse. According to Yahoo's Charles Robinson, the Packers are unwilling to agree to conditions that would protect the Jets in the event Rodgers decides not to play in 2024.

Apparently, the teams have agreed on parameters that would send the Packers a pair of second-round picks in exchange for Rodgers, but the Jets are hoping to add conditions that would send compensation back their way in 2025 if Rodgers pulls the plug. Rodgers is 39 years old and has flirted with retirement in recent years.

The Jets' unwillingness to go out on a ledge beyond this season for Rodgers speaks to his mercurial nature and the uncertainty surrounding his ability even this season. The four-time MVP is coming off a year in which he set career lows in passing yards per game (217.4) and passer rating (91.1). They'd never admit it, but the Jets clearly believe there's a scenario where their marriage with Rodgers flames out quickly.
