New Orleans Saints Release Quarterback

The New Orleans Saints have waived quarterback Jake Luton, according to recent reports from ESPN's Field Yates and the NFL transaction wire.

Luton, who was originally drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, had brief stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins, and most recently the Saints, where he spent the 2021 season on the practice squad and signed a reserve/future contract in January 2022.

However, the Saints' recent signing of Derek Carr and selection of Jake Haener in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft made Luton expendable.

Despite starting three games for the Jaguars in 2020, Luton failed to secure a spot on the Saints' roster for the 2022 season. Throughout his career, he has completed 55 percent of his passes for 624 yards, with two touchdowns and six interceptions.

Luton's release from the Saints creates a potential opportunity for other players to step up, while he will now be placed on waivers and must look for other opportunities if he wishes to continue his career in the NFL.

Luton will likely be sought after by other teams for practice squad support, but it's unlikely that he will pose a significant threat to any team's actual depth chart. Photo Credit: Peter van den Berg-USA TODAY Sports
