NFL Rumors: Las Vegas Raiders to Visit With All-Pro Cornerback

The Las Vegas Raiders may give another chance to a former superstar. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, free agent cornerback and two-time All-Pro Marcus Peters is set for a visit and a workout on Monday. Peters is 30 years old and coming off a couple of down years, but he was a valuable, game-changing defender at the peak of his powers. At times, the three-time Pro Bowler has been one of the most feared coverage men in the league: he led the league in interceptions as a rookie and has led the league in interception return yardage three times. Unfortunately, his high-risk, high-reward playstyle has its downsides: in 2022, he allowed a frustrating 113.7 passer rating on throws in his direction.

Peters could be a high-upside bargain signing for a Raiders organization that should be willing to try anything in the secondary at this point. They've finished 24th or worse in points allowed for five straight seasons due in large part to an inability to cobble together a credible defensive back group.

Peters is still relatively young, and few free agents available at this time of year have a resume as impressive as his. Cornerback is generally a volatile position, and a bounce-back season isn't outside the realm of possibility for the former Baltimore Raven. Given the Raiders are coming off a 6-11 season and still a long way from contention, Peters would be a sensible gamble.
