Philadelphia Eagles Sign All-Pro Linebacker Shaquille Leonard

The Philadelphia Eagles are adding some star power to their defense. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Eagles have agreed to terms with former Indianapolis Colts linebacker and three-time All-Pro Darius Shaquille Leonard on a one-year deal.

Leonard was a shocking mid-season cut by the Colts in November. With the Colts since 2018, Leonard had seemingly bounced back from a frustrating 2022 season in which he missed all but three games, starting nine games so far this season and logging 65 tackles.

Still, the Colts clearly didn't see Leonard as a significant difference-maker at this point in his career. He currently sits on a subpar 60.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus over his 455 snaps and has yet to log a sack, forced fumble, pass deflection, or interception through nine starts. The Colts are also sitting on a 7-5 record, so it's not like they're quitting on the season either.

After fielding one of the league's truly dominant rosters in 2022, the Eagles defense has fallen back to earth this season despite their league-best 10-2 record. After finishing last season ranked second in yards allowed with 301.5 per game, the Eagles are a decidedly mediocre 23rd this season with 353.7 yards allowed per game.

The Eagles are clearly hoping Leonard can turn around that trend. He should slot in as a starter in the near future given the injuries to Zach Cunningham and Nakobe Dean. Still only 28 years old, it's still possible Leonard could reestablish himself as a star at inside linebacker. At the very least, he should see plenty of meaningful snaps.
