NFL Rumors: One Team Tried To Trade For Patrick Mahomes In 2022

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes walks off the field after Super Bowl LIX in 2025

It sounds unbelievable now, but back in 2022, the Washington Commanders reportedly took a moonshot swing: they tried to trade for Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Washington contacted every team about quarterback availability,  including Kansas City, before ultimately settling for Carson Wentz. That deal went nowhere fast, as Wentz was released after just one underwhelming season.

Mahomes Was Never Available - But That Didn't Stop Washington

Of course, the Chiefs laughed off the idea of moving Mahomes, who had already won an MVP and a Super Bowl by then. Mahomes is the face of the franchise, locked into a 10-year, $450 million deal signed in 2020.

In hindsight, Washington’s pursuit only shows how desperate they were to find a franchise QB, and how Mahomes’ value made him totally untouchable. After striking out on Wentz and enduring a bumpy ride with Sam Howell, the Commanders finally found some hope by drafting Jayden Daniels second overall in 2024.

While Mahomes and the Chiefs are gunning for their fourth title after a lopsided Super Bowl 59 loss, Washington appears to be in good hands with Daniels moving forward.
