Rams Sign Free Agent Kicker With A Cult Following

Missouri kicker Harrison Mevis during the 2024 NFL Combine.

Harrison Mevis is in Los Angeles, and the Los Angeles Rams hope his leg brings calm to what has been a chaotic kicking season so far for them.

The cult favorite from Missouri, known to college fans as the “Thiccer Kicker,” signed to the practice squad to compete directly with Joshua Karty after another shaky outing.

Why Mevis, why now

The 5'11", 242-pound kicker was money at Mizzou with 89 of 106 field goals, including a 61-yard SEC record that beat Kansas State. He followed that with a sharp spring in the UFL, going 20 for 21 with multiple makes from 50 plus.

The Rams need that steadiness. Karty sits at 10 for 15 on field goals and 23 for 26 on extra points, with a missed 39-yarder and a PAT in the win over the Saints. With the roster also adding veteran long snapper Jake McQuaide to push Alex Ward, the club is testing every piece of the operation in expanded midweek periods. Mevis can be elevated twice on game day before the team would need to add him to the 53.

Inside the competition

The Rams are 6-2, and special-teams miscues helped tilt losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. McVay said the staff would increase Wednesday and Thursday reps to create a true head-to-head.

Karty welcomed it and said he felt the ball came off his foot well in practice. Mevis arrived from training in Columbia, Missouri, and made it clear he is here to make kicks, nothing more complicated than that.
