Steelers T.J. Watt Hospitalized After Incident At Practice Facility

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt reacts before 2025 game.

Pittsburgh Steelers superstar T.J. Watt is hospitalized after experiencing sudden lung discomfort at the team facility on Wednesday, throwing his availability for Monday night’s matchup against the Miami Dolphins into doubt.

The Steelers announced that Watt underwent immediate medical evaluation and remains in a local hospital for further testing, with head coach Mike Tomlin expected to provide updates when appropriate. ESPN reports that Watt first noted the issue during treatment, prompting swift action by the team’s medical staff and attention from the NFLPA.

Steelers Facing Uncertainty Without Their Defensive Anchor

Watt, one of the greatest defensive players of his generation, is in the first year of a massive three-year, $123 million extension and has been a force once again this season.

He has started 56 straight games for the Steelers, posting seven sacks, double-digit tackles for loss, an interception and three forced fumbles while leading a 7-6 team clinging to first place in the AFC North.

What Watt’s Absence Means for Pittsburgh’s Playoff Push

While the organization’s focus is understandably on Watt’s health, the timing could not be tougher for the Steelers. Pittsburgh is entering a crucial four-game stretch against the Miami Dolphins, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens

If Watt cannot play Monday, rookie Nick Herbig is expected to step into a starting role opposite Alex Highsmith. Off the field, Watt’s year has also been eventful as he and his wife welcomed their first child.
