NFL Rumors: Patriots Wide Receiver Becoming Trade Candidate

New England Patriots Head Coach Mike Vrabel looks on during 2026 game.

For the second straight offseason, Kayshon Boutte finds himself at the center of trade speculation in New England.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Monday that Boutte's name has come up in trade discussions around the league, with teams believing he could be available for the right offer.

"With Romeo Doubs coming in and the eventual A.J. Brown trade, teams believe he could be available for the right price," Schultz posted on X.

Boutte was also notably absent from the Patriots' voluntary offseason program on Monday, with social media showing the 23-year-old wideout in Miami during the first day of workouts.

Head coach Mike Vrabel addressed it directly in his press availability. "Don't really try to have a sense of anything, why guys don't come. It's voluntary," Vrabel said when asked if he had a sense of whether the absence was contract-related or trade-related.

Why the Rumors Make Sense

The receiver room math in New England is getting crowded fast.

Boutte had the best season of his career in 2025, catching 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns while serving as Drake Maye's primary deep threat.

His one-handed touchdown catch against the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional became one of the most memorable plays of the Patriots' Super Bowl run.

But the front office has since signed Doubs to a four-year $68 million deal, and per multiple reports, an A.J. Brown trade from Philadelphia is expected to land in New England around June 1.

Brown is a classic X-receiver. That is the exact role Boutte has been filling.

Adding Brown to a room that already has Doubs, Mack Hollins, DeMario Douglas, and Kyle Williams makes it difficult to envision a path where Boutte is getting the kind of snaps and targets that justify keeping him around in a contract year.

Both Boutte and Douglas are entering the final year of their rookie deals and will hit free agency in March 2027.

If New England is not planning to extend Boutte, trading him now while his value is high after a productive season could get them a better return than the compensatory pick they might receive for losing him in free agency next year.

What Boutte Is Worth

Boutte's 551 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season, combined with his age and the chemistry he has built with Maye, would draw real interest around the league.

A receiver who ran routes at an elite level last year, caught 27 of his 33 receptions for first downs, and is entering his age-24 season is a legitimate asset. He previously addressed trade rumors in a way that suggested he had heard this story before.

"I heard about it, but I tried not to really put too much time into that," Boutte said last spring. "There's just a lot of people sitting behind phones and just typing. It's got nothing to really do with me."

Last year, nothing materialized and he responded by posting his best season.

Whether the same outcome follows this year depends entirely on what happens in New England over the next six weeks.
