The New Orleans Saints placed the wide receiver on the reserve/retired list on Sunday, four days into training camp, ending his career at just 24 years old.
A Shocking Decision
The move caught the organization off guard.
Several people within the Saints organization had expressed excitement about what Polk could do with a fresh opportunity heading into camp, and he was considered a legitimate candidate for the third or fourth wide receiver role.

Per Nick Underhill, Polk was happy, healthy, and satisfied with his role on the team, but ultimately felt he needed to step away from the game for his own personal well-being.
He had been excused from the team's last two practices for what head coach Kellen Moore described only as "personal things."
The Career
Polk was selected 37th overall by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 2024 draft out of Washington, where he was a national championship runner-up.
His rookie season did not go smoothly, as he caught just 12 of 33 targets for 87 yards and two touchdowns across 15 games, with several statistical models rating him among the least productive receivers in the league that year.

Before the 2025 season began, Polk required season-ending shoulder surgery, and the Patriots traded him and a 2028 seventh-round pick to New Orleans in September for a 2027 sixth-round pick.
He never played a game for the Saints, spending the entire 2025 season on injured reserve.
What It Means For New Orleans
Polk was one of three receivers the Saints acquired shortly before last season, joining Devaughn Vele and Trey Palmer, and the team also selected three receivers in this year's draft, including No. 8 overall pick Jordyn Tyson.
The Saints' top three in the rotation likely remain unaffected, with Vele holding the inside track at the No. 3 role.
But Polk's sudden exit could push fourth-round pick Bryce Lance into a larger role than initially planned and may open a roster spot for a player like Ronnie Bell or Kevin Austin as New Orleans finalizes its receiver room.
