Cincinnati signed Jonathan Allen in free agency and traded for Dexter Lawrence II this offseason, immediately crowding the interior of its defensive front.
Per Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox, that surplus makes T.J. Slaton a trade candidate, even after he started all 17 games for the Bengals last season.
The Numbers Work Against Him
The production doesn't match the price tag. Slaton posted 52 tackles and three sacks last year, respectable raw totals, but Pro Football Focus graded him just 116th out of 134 qualified defensive linemen.
With Lawrence and Allen now entrenched as clear upgrades in the middle of Cincinnati's line, Slaton's path to regular snaps has narrowed considerably.
Slaton is in the final year of the two-year, $14.1 million contract he signed with the Bengals last offseason, and per Knox, trading him would save Cincinnati roughly $6.7 million in cap space.
Bengals director of player personnel Duke Tobin has said the roster build is largely complete for the year, an indication that any remaining moves are more likely to be subtractions than additions.
Where He Could Land
Knox projected Slaton's trade value at a 2027 fifth-round pick, and pointed to the Buffalo Bills as a fit worth watching.
Buffalo already added athletic pass-rusher Zane Durant in the fifth round of this year's draft, but still lacks a true space-eater up front after DaQuan Jones remained unsigned in free agency. Slaton's size, 6-foot-5 and 340 pounds, fills exactly that kind of role, and his run-defense numbers held up even in an otherwise middling season, ranking 17th among all defensive tackles in solo run tackles last year.
Slaton, a 2021 fifth-round pick by Green Bay, has never missed a regular-season game across his five-year career, giving him appeal as a reliable depth piece even if he's no longer a clear starter in Cincinnati.
If the Bengals don't find a trade partner willing to meet their asking price, Slaton likely settles into a rotational role behind Lawrence and Allen for the rest of the season, with free agency in the spring becoming his next opportunity to find a fresh start elsewhere.
