San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Carted to Locker Room

The San Francisco 49ers may have lost another starting quarterback. Jimmy Garoppolo went down in the first half of the team's Week 13 game against the Miami Dolphins and was quickly declared out for the remainder of the day with an ankle injury. Garoppolo completed two of his four passes for 56 yards before his first-quarter exit. Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy has taken over in his absence, completing 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 116 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception at the half.

Garoppolo's exit could mean the second major ankle injury to a starting quarterback this season for the 49ers. Opening-day starter Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle fracture in Week 2, forcing the 49ers to turn to Garoppolo. Jimmy G has served the 49ers well, winning six of his nine starts before today while managing a career-best 103.0 passer rating. Barring surprising competence from this year's Mister Irrelevant, an extended absence from Garoppolo could sink the 49ers' season.

Garoppolo joined the 49ers in 2017 via trade with the New England Patriots. He has won 37 of his 54 games in his six seasons with the 49ers. The team is 9-29 over that span without him.
