San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Done for the Season

One of the NFC's top contenders may have just suffered a fatal blow to its Super Bowl aspirations. Following the San Francisco 49ers' 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has suffered a broken foot that is expected to be season-ending. Garoppolo went down in the first quarter during Sunday's Week 13 matchup after completing two of four passes for 56 yards. Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy netted 184 yards on 40 dropbacks with two touchdowns and an interception in relief.

Purdy helped the 49ers to a win today, but he's unlikely to be a viable replacement over the remaining portion of the season. The 49ers are 9-29 in games that Garoppolo has missed over the past six seasons and 37-17 in games he has started. Purdy was this year's Mister Irrelevant for a reason.

The 49ers will have to manage Purdy carefully if they're to have any chance of winning the NFC West. At 8-4, they hold a narrow lead over the 7-5 Seattle Seahawks, but they'll meet in a crucial divisional matchup in Week 15. They'll need their top-ranked scoring defense to continue its exceptional play and recently acquired running back Christian McCaffrey to contribute more games like today's; the 2019 All-Pro had arguably his best game as a 49er, totaling 144 yards from scrimmage on 25 touches.
