San Francisco 49ers & Carolina Panthers Complete Trade

The San Francisco 49ers have acquired kicker Zane Gonzalez from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional draft pick in the 2025 NFL draft, according to sources.

Gonzalez was expected to be released by the Panthers after missing the entire 2022 season due to a groin injury. However, the Panthers ultimately decided to trade him to the 49ers, who were in need of a kicker since they're not expected to re-sign Robbie Gould during the offseason.

Gonzalez's career has seen him make 80.5% of his field goal attempts, which is less than optimal efficiency.

However, in 2021, he had a strong season with a 91% success rate (20-for-22) for the Panthers. Despite his injury history and career stats, Gonzalez is likely to be on the 49ers' Week 1 roster if he is healthy.

It is unclear at this time if the 49ers plan to bring in additional competition for the kicker position during training camp.

Meanwhile, the Panthers had already signed Eddy Pineiro as a replacement for Gonzalez, which likely played a role in their decision to trade him rather than release him. Photo Credit: Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports
