Kansas City Chiefs Sign Tom Brady's Backup Quarterback

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly signing Blaine Gabbert as their veteran backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes.

Gabbert, a former quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, had a short-lived stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars before transitioning to a backup role with the San Francisco 49ers. He's spent the last three seasons with the Bucs.

With 9,302 passing yards, 51 passing touchdowns, and 47 interceptions across 67 games played, the 33-year-old has had an uneven career.

Gabbert's potential signing comes after Chad Henne's retirement, which leaves a vacancy for the QB2 position in Kansas City. Gabbert is seen as a suitable candidate for the role, having previously served as Tom Brady's second-string quarterback in Tampa Bay.

Although he hasn't started a game since the 2018 season with the Tennessee Titans, his experience and leadership make him a viable option for the Chiefs.

While the details of Gabbert's contract have not been disclosed yet, they may play a role in determining his chances of winning the backup job. Regardless, working as a backup for Andy Reid is a highly desirable position, and Gabbert's veteran experience could prove invaluable to the team. Photo Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports
