Pittsburgh Steelers Release Cornerback

The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially announced the release of veteran cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, according to multiple sources including Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Witherspoon, who initially joined the Steelers in the 2021 season, started seven games over the past two years. However, his time with the team was plagued by injuries, and during the 2022 season, he appeared in only four games before a hamstring injury forced him to miss the final nine games.

Despite the setbacks, Witherspoon managed to make an impact when he was on the field. In the 2022 season, he recorded 20 tackles, two passes defended, and even secured an interception.

Prior to his stint with the Steelers, Witherspoon spent his first four NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, who drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Now a free agent, the 28-year-old cornerback will be looking for opportunities with other teams in the upcoming offseason.

While his injury history and limited playing time might diminish his chances of becoming a starting option, Witherspoon's experience and potential as a rotational or depth player in the secondary could still attract interest from other NFL franchises. Photo Credit:  Katie Stratman-USA TODAY Sports
