NFL Rumors: 2 Teams To Have "Tug-Of-War" For Kirk Cousins In 2024

In recent discussions, there has been speculation about the future of Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins and potential interest from the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams in the 2024 offseason.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio has suggested the possibility of a tug-of-war between the 49ers' Kyle Shanahan and the Rams' Sean McVay for Cousins' services next March.

Cousins, who is entering the final year of his contract, has halted negotiations with the Vikings until March after failing to reach an extension agreement.

“I think you’re going to see — unless the Vikings re-sign him by then, and they can’t use the franchise tag on him, the way his contract is structured — you’re going to see a potential tug of war between Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay for Kirk Cousins next March. Mark that down.”

This decision opens the door for other teams to pursue the four-time Pro Bowler.

The strong connection between Cousins and Shanahan, dating back to their time together in Washington, makes a move to the 49ers a logical consideration, especially given the team's history of quarterback injuries.

Cousins also played under McVay in Washington as well.

However, the 49ers' current quarterback situation, featuring Brock Purdy, and potentially Sam Darnold or Trey Lance, may impact their decision.

While Cousins has expressed his focus on the current season and discussions with the Vikings in March, other potential scenarios are worth considering.

If the Vikings struggle and a contender loses their starting quarterback to a season-ending injury before the trade deadline in November, the Vikings could explore trading Cousins for draft capital and potentially shift their focus to the future.

Regardless, the rumors and speculation surrounding Cousins are expected to continue and gain momentum over the coming months. Photo Credit: Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sports
