NFL Rumors: Patriots Could Make Shocking Move With Stefon Diggs

The Stefon Diggs era in New England might be over before it begins.

After signing a three-year, $69 million deal this offseason to become Drake Maye’s go-to receiver, Diggs now finds himself at the center of swirling release rumors. A viral Memorial Day boat video showed Diggs holding an unknown pink substance, and while that set off alarms, Patriots insider Scott Zolak says it’s “not just the boat”—suggesting deeper concerns about Diggs' commitment and off-field behavior are “being thought of” internally.

Concerns Go Beyond the Viral Boat Clip

Diggs has not yet fully returned from the ACL tear that ended his 2024 season, and he's been absent from voluntary OTAs. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Patriots may have a contractual “out” due to the injury language in his deal. If Diggs hasn’t passed a full physical, they may be able to release him without owing the majority of the $69 million. While Diggs has posted workout videos and looks physically sharp, Zolak insists that behind the scenes, the Patriots are questioning whether he’s truly “all-in.”

Can the Patriots Afford to Let Him Go?

Cutting Diggs would blow a hole in an already thin receiver room that includes DeMario Douglas, Kendrick Bourne, and rookie Kyle Williams. Zolak himself believes the Pats should keep Diggs, pointing out that even with baggage, he’s the only receiver on the roster who can truly draw defensive attention. For a team trying to develop a rookie quarterback, that kind of presence matters. But if trust and buy-in issues persist—and if the team can walk away financially unscathed—it’s not out of the question that Diggs never takes a snap in Foxborough.
