Nothing is imminent, and Atlanta would prefer to keep him — but I’m told it would take at least a Day 2 pick to even spark serious talks. pic.twitter.com/smNLgOcBow
Pitts has one year left on his rookie deal and is set to earn a relatively affordable $10.878 million in 2025. Per Schultz, it would take "at least" a second or third-round pick to get trade talks going.
Pitts entered the league as perhaps the most highly touted tight end prospect of all time. In three years at Florida, he compiled 100 receptions for 1492 yards and 18 touchdowns and even earned the John Mackey award in 2020. He also impressed at the NFL combine and his pro day, blazing a 4.44 40-yard dash at 6'5" and 245 lbs.
The Falcons made Pitts the fourth pick of the absolutely loaded 2021 NFL Draft, taking him ahead of future All-Pros like Ja'Marr Chase, Penei Sewell, and Patrick Surtain. By those lofty standards, Pitts has disappointed. After a promising rookie season, the 24-year-old has amassed a relatively modest 1625 receiving yards and nine touchdowns over his last 44 games.
Given his elite tools and young age, it makes sense that other teams would see Pitts as a worthy reclamation project. Unfortunately for them, the Falcons don't appear to have given up on Pitts. They're about to hand over the reins of their offense to 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix, and the young quarterback could use all the help he can get. Given Pitts' low cost this season, it's worth it for the Falcons to see if he and Penix can develop any chemistry.
If teams want to pry Pitts away from the Falcons, they'll probably have to make a significant offer. Even if Pitts leaves in free agency following this season, the Falcons could fetch as much as a third-round compensatory pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. Any curious team would have to drastically exceed that to get negotiations rolling.
