Thielen, 35, spent the past two seasons with the Carolina Panthers but began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with Minnesota in 2013. With veteran WR Jordan Addison suspended for the first three games and Jalen Nailor sidelined with a hand injury, the Vikings are seeking an experienced target for rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Minnesota has officially inquired about a trade for Thielen, who could start immediately if a deal is completed.

Thielen’s Fit and Vikings’ WR Challenges
Thielen brings familiarity with head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system and a strong offseason rapport with McCarthy. Last season with the Panthers, he recorded 48 receptions for 615 yards and five touchdowns, following a 2023 campaign with 103 catches for 1,014 yards.
Minnesota’s receiving corps is already missing Rondale Moore for the year, while Justin Jefferson is expected back from a hamstring injury in time for Week 1. Thielen’s potential return offers an immediate solution to the Vikings’ WR depth issues, while also providing leadership and knowledge of the team’s offensive scheme.

Panthers’ Perspective and Potential Trade Outcome
Thielen is in the final year of his one-year, $8.7 million contract with Carolina and reportedly considered retirement this offseason. A return to Minnesota could appeal to the wideout, offering a chance to close out his career with the team where he became a star.
