Steelers Signing Talented Former Chargers Cornerback

Los Angeles Chargers Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. emerges onto the field before 2023 game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing Asante Samuel Jr. to the practice squad, with the expectation he moves to the 53-man roster once ramped up.

The move gives Pittsburgh a talented cover man at a time they need it most. The Steelers are signing Asante Samuel Jr. after he was cleared for football activities following spinal fusion surgery in April that addressed issues stemming from last season’s shoulder and neck problems.

He visited with multiple teams, but chose Pittsburgh for his comeback.

Why Samuel Fits What Pittsburgh Needs Right Now

Depth has been tested in the Steelers secondary. Darius Slay is in concussion protocol and Jalen Ramsey has been playing free safety to cover injuries.

That left Joey Porter Jr., Brandin Echols, and James Pierre shouldering heavy snaps. Samuel brings legit ball skills and instincts on the outside, with 50 games, 37 passes defended, six interceptions, and 176 tackles across four seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers

His playoff tape still pops, including that insane first half against Trevor Lawrence in the 2022 Wild Card round where he racked up three interceptions. The signing lets Pittsburgh be patient with his ramp up while positioning him to contribute as soon as he is ready.

Even if Samuel starts on packages, the path to a full role is clear given the injuries and recent inconsistencies at corner.
