New York Jets Sign Former Highly Touted Quarterback

Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker throws the ball during 2025 game.

The New York Jets added another quarterback to the mix on Thursday, signing former Tennessee standout Hendon Hooker to the practice squad.

The move reunites Hooker with head coach Aaron Glenn, who previously worked with him during Hooker’s time with the Detroit Lions.

Hooker entered the NFL as a third round pick by the Lions in 2023 and spent two seasons in Detroit before getting waived during final roster cuts in August.

He then landed on the Carolina Panthers practice squad, but never carved out a stable role there and was eventually released after Carolina added more depth behind Bryce Young and Andy Dalton.

This signing comes with the Jets sitting at 3-11 and cycling through options at quarterback, including Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and rookie Brady Cook.

Hooker gives the team another emergency option who already knows Glenn’s coaching style, and it also lets the Jets keep evaluating arms while the season winds down.
