Buffalo Bills Forced To Make Emergency Kicker Signing

Indianapolis Colts kicker Michael Badgley reacts during 2025 game.

The Buffalo Bills just made an emergency move at kicker, which is a big decision with playoff positioning on the line.

With veteran Matt Prater dealing with a right quad injury and ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo signed Michael Badgley to the practice squad and released cornerback M.J. Devonshire to clear the spot.

Badgley is now the guy in line to handle kicking duties immediately, with reports indicating he’s expected to be elevated for the Browns game.

Why Buffalo moved fast on Michael Badgley

Prater had been a reliable stopgap for Buffalo, but the Bills can’t risk going into a road game without a legit Plan B, especially late in the season when every point matters and weather can flip a game script in a hurry.

Badgley also comes with a pretty clean recent resume. He kicked earlier this season with the Indianapolis Colts, and he’s been around enough teams that the “new building, new snapper, new holder” adjustment is nothing new for him.

Buffalo just needs competence, timing, and confidence, and then let the rest of the roster handle the heavy lifting.
