NFL Rumors: Chiefs Interested in Trading for Huge Name
Patrick Mahomes is coming back from a torn ACL.
He's probably not going to be as mobile as usual, at least early in the season, which means the offensive line needs to be as good as it can possibly be.
The Chiefs released Jawaan Taylor and currently have journeyman Jaylon Moore penciled in at right tackle. Williams, who posted a 91.5 overall PFF grade last season, third among all offensive tackles, is a different class of player entirely.

Kansas City also took Josh Simmons in the first round last year, but Simmons had a mixed rookie season, graded 55th out of 84 eligible players, and missed time for undisclosed reasons plus a late-season wrist injury.
Nobody is giving up on him, but he's not the answer at left tackle right now. The Chiefs' interior line is already one of the better units in football.
Slide Williams in at left tackle, move Simmons to the right side, and suddenly this offensive line looks like a problem for opposing pass rushers.
The Chiefs missed the playoffs last year for the first time in the Mahomes era. They need to get back. This is how you get back.
What the 49ers Are Doing About It
Several mock drafts have linked the 49ers to offensive tackle prospects in the first round, with both Alabama's Kadyn Proctor and Utah's Caleb Lomu surfacing as potential targets at pick 27.
Proctor is the more physically freakish prospect, and he's listed at 6-foot-7, 352 pounds, 815-pound squat, and went from allowing 12 sacks his freshman year to just two this past season. Lomu didn't allow a sack all of 2025.

“No updates from me. I actually stay pretty much out of that. I know John [Lynch] and everyone is working hard to do that. I believe we will get that done. We love Trent too much and eventually that will work out.”

Either one gives the 49ers a succession plan, which also gives them some leverage in negotiations with Williams.
Williams is 37, turning 38 before the season, and threading the needle on a deal that works for both sides isn't straightforward when age is a real variable. The 49ers want him back. Williams hasn't pushed for a trade. But the Chiefs are waiting, and if this thing drags into the summer without resolution, Kansas City may end up getting a shot at the player they tried to land back in 2021 when San Francisco outbid them the first time around.
