Bills Claim WR Off Waivers, Release Another Receiver

The Buffalo Bills made a minor roster move ahead of training camp, claiming wide receiver Quentin Skinner off waivers from the AFC East rival New York Jets.

In a corresponding move, the Bills released wide receiver Deven Thompkins.

Adding Size To The Room

Skinner brings a very different physical profile to Buffalo's receiver group.

The 24-year-old measures in around 6-foot-4 and 203 pounds, giving the Bills a big-bodied option who could provide value in the red zone, a notable contrast to the departing Thompkins, who stands under 5-foot-7 and around 170 pounds.

Skinner originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas in 2025.

He had a standout college career with the Jayhawks, finishing with 80 receptions for 1,584 yards and 11 touchdowns, and his story is one of perseverance, having walked on at Kansas after a torn ACL his senior year of high school limited his recruitment.

His NFL experience is limited, as he appeared in just one game as a rookie, ironically against the Bills in Week 18, catching one pass for 10 yards and a two-point conversion in what turned out to be the final game ever at Highmark Stadium.

He also led the Jets with 114 receiving yards across three preseason games last summer before spending most of his rookie year on New York's practice squad.

The Divisional Angle

Whenever a player crosses over to a division rival, questions about a competitive advantage arise.

In this case, it is likely a non-factor, as the Jets and Bills do not play until Weeks 10 and 18, meaning any information Skinner picked up in New York would be largely outdated by then.

Though he is a roster longshot behind Buffalo's established receivers, a strong training camp could make the Bills consider a 53-man roster spot for a player with intriguing size and traits.

Thompkins, whom Buffalo signed on June 21 after a strong minicamp showing, now hits the open market again.

The former undrafted free agent out of Utah State has appeared in 36 career games with the Buccaneers, Panthers, and Falcons, hauling in 29 catches for 162 yards and a touchdown.

For Buffalo, the swap is a low-stakes bet on upside and size as Josh Allen's supporting cast takes shape heading into camp.
