ESPN's Adam Schefter, Ian Rapoport, and Mike Garafolo reported Sunday that New York has been evaluating six names: free agent Jimmy Garoppolo, Cardinals backup Gardner Minshew, Vikings third-stringer J.J. McCarthy, 49ers backup Mac Jones, Chiefs backup Justin Fields, and Brandon Allen, who spent this year's training camp with the Giants.
Garoppolo appears to be the frontrunner.
He remains unsigned after passing on the Rams and Cardinals this offseason, and per ESPN, he wouldn't require the Giants to give up any draft compensation to sign him outright.
League Sources Believe A Move Is Coming Soon
Tom Pelissero reported that New York had "spent the week making calls" on quarterbacks around the league, with sources describing an addition as a matter of "when, not if," possibly as soon as Monday.
Pelissero's own list of six names overlapped with, but wasn't identical to, ESPN's group, also including Jones, McCarthy, Fields, and Garoppolo, but naming Spencer Rattler and Joe Milton instead of Minshew and Allen.
Minshew and Fields have both played under Giants offensive coordinator Matt Nagy before, while McCarthy has extra intrigue given his college ties to head coach John Harbaugh's brother, Jim, who coached him at Michigan.
McCarthy would represent the biggest swing of the group, since he was a top-10 pick in 2024 and remains under contract with Minnesota as their third-string option after a rough rookie season.
Head coach John Harbaugh has left the door open for Dart himself to potentially return later this season if the Giants make a playoff push, but for now, the focus is squarely on adding a proven arm behind Winston.
