Chiefs Have Signed Running Back Ronald Jones

After choosing to not re-sign running back Darrel Williams to a contract, the Kansas City Chiefs are replacing him with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Ronald Jones. NFL insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Chiefs have the 24-year old running back to a one-year deal. The deal could reportedly earn Jones  $5 million over the year.

Throughout his career, Jones has had two seasons of 1000+ combined rushing and receiving yards. He is expected to be a good duel threat that Mahomes can use as a receiver or a running back. However, despite having two seasons of 1000+ all purpose yards seasons including his career best of 1143 yards in 2020, his 2021 campaign saw him lose the touches he had previously as former top five pick Leonard Fournette starting over Jones. His 428 rushing yards and 492 all-purpose yards last season, were his lowest since his rookie season in 2018 where he only put up 44 rushing yards and 77 total yards in nine games.

With the fresh start in Kansas City, Jones should be able to get more opportunities again sharing the back field with Clyde Edwards-Helaire in a system where he often split with Darrel Williams pretty equally when healthy last season. And in the case, CEH struggles to stay healthy again Jones can pick up the work in the back field as proven by his track record in previous years of 724 rushing yards in 2019 and 978 in 2020.

Even with the news, having just come out Patrick Mahomes seems excited already for the new acquisition that gives the team a new weapon after trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins earlier this week.

It should be interesting to see how Jones and Edwards-Helaire split the back field for the upcoming 2022 NFL season as there is now two very capable running backs in the Chiefs offense again.
