NFL Rumors: Dolphins Have Had Their Eyes On One Raiders Player For A Long Time

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer runs with the ball during 2025 game.

Fresh off trading Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Miami Dolphins are reportedly pursuing a new tight end, and they have their sights set on Michael Mayer

Dolphins eye Raiders’ Michael Mayer as tight end search heats up

According to Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins have "had their eye" on the Las Vegas Raiders tight end for some time. Mayer, a 2023 second-round pick, is coming off a quiet sophomore campaign, but his youth, upside, and affordable rookie deal make him an intriguing option for Miami as they try to reload for 2025.

Raiders remain committed to Mayer despite Bowers' breakout

While Mayer’s numbers, 48 catches for 460 yards and two touchdowns in 25 games, aren’t flashy, the Raiders still believe in his potential. Head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly reportedly have no interest in trading him, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal

Mayer himself confirmed he expects to have a big role in the Raiders’ evolving offense. In a recent team interview, he praised the tight end room and hinted at heavy usage in 12- and 13-personnel packages alongside breakout star Brock Bowers and veteran Ian Thomas.

Why Miami sees Mayer as a fit, and what it could cost

The Dolphins have a glaring need at tight end, with only journeymen and rookies currently on the depth chart. Mayer, who was once compared to Jason Witten for his blocking and route-running savvy, could offer immediate help at a bargain: he's owed just $3.6 million over the next two seasons.

With Bowers clearly the top option in Las Vegas, Miami may be betting that the Raiders will eventually listen to offers, especially if Mayer’s usage dips again.

For now, though, Las Vegas seems content to keep both young tight ends and let Kelly’s system decide how best to deploy them.
