NFL Rumors: New Orleans Saints Name Starting Quarterback

New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler warms up before 2025 preseason game.

The New Orleans Saints have made their decision under center.

Head coach Kellen Moore announced Tuesday that Spencer Rattler will open the 2025 season as the team’s starting quarterback, winning the job over rookie Tyler Shough and third-year passer Jake Haener.

Rattler earns QB1 role

Moore cited Rattler’s consistency, decision-making, and ability to make plays with both his arm and legs as key reasons for handing him the QB1 role. The former Oklahoma and South Carolina standout completed nearly 70% of his passes this preseason, showing poise in camp and in game action. “He’s earned this opportunity,” Moore said. “He’s been consistent all offseason and has made great decisions.”

A second chance in New Orleans

Rattler’s journey has been anything but smooth.

Drafted in the fifth round in 2024, he went 0-6 as a starter last season while filling in for the injured Derek Carr. With Carr now retired, Rattler has a chance to reset and lead a Saints team desperate for stability at quarterback after years of turnover since Drew Brees’ retirement.

The 24-year-old will make his seventh career start in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals, looking to finally deliver on the potential that once made him one of the nation’s most hyped recruits.
