NFL Rumors: 49ers & Commanders Linked to 1-for-1 Trade
49ers view Luke McCaffrey as ideal Aiyuk return
From San Francisco’s perspective, this is about salvaging value before an expected release.
Aiyuk is coming off a major knee injury suffered in 2024, but his 2023 production still carries weight around the league after posting over 1,300 receiving yards and emerging as a true No. 1 option.

The Commanders remain the most logical landing spot.
General manager Adam Peters has already brought in several former 49ers, and Aiyuk’s connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels from Arizona State helps.
If the Commanders want to avoid a bidding war with teams like the New England Patriots, the 49ers could push for a trade, and Luke McCaffrey is the name they’d want back.
McCaffrey, a 2024 third-round pick, flashed versatility with 203 receiving yards, three touchdowns, and contributions as a returner in just nine games last season.
For a 49ers team needing depth and special teams help after offseason departures, he checks a lot of boxes. Add in the family connection to Christian McCaffrey, and it’s an intriguing fit on several levels.
Commanders roster squeeze could make McCaffrey available
The Commanders have loaded up their receiver room with additions like Van Jefferson and Dyami Brown, while still featuring Terry McLaurin, Treylon Burks, and emerging talent like Jaylin Lane.
Richard Sherman shares his thoughts on the 49ers holding Brandon Aiyuk hostage:

“I see a lot of people commenting that the 49ers are holding him hostage and it’s unfair and they’re doing wrong by him. I want to give my two cents on that. I don’t think so. I think the opposite.… pic.twitter.com/slKzVKYGXl
That crowded depth chart has already led to speculation that McCaffrey could become a “sleeper” trade candidate heading into the 2026 NFL Draft.
Despite his upside as a slot weapon and return specialist, there simply may not be enough touches to go around if Aiyuk is added to the mix.
In a perfect world for San Francisco, this becomes a one-for-one swap.
It’s far from guaranteed, but Washington is believed to be high on McCaffrey, and if there’s one scenario where the 49ers avoid losing Aiyuk for nothing, this might be it.
