Texans' CJ Stroud Has Reported Astronomical Asking Price For Next Contract
Per Jeremy Branham of ESPN 97.5 in Houston, the Texans have offered Stroud something in the range of $50 million to $55 million annually.
Stroud, according to the same report, is seeking $70 million per year, a number that would instantly make him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history by average annual value.
The Number Raised Eyebrows
The current record belongs to Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes at just over $63 million annually. A $70 million deal for Stroud would blow past that mark despite a resume that includes a rough finish to 2025, when he threw nine turnovers across two playoff games in a divisional-round exit.

Heavy's Charlie Baduini argued the Texans should be laughing off the demand, suggesting a more realistic outcome lines up with Spotrac's independent valuation of roughly $51.6 million annually on a three-year extension tacked onto Stroud's existing rookie deal.
That structure would keep him in Houston through 2030 and rank him 12th among NFL quarterbacks by average salary, a number Baduini says better reflects where Stroud's play currently sits.
Why Houston Isn't Rushing Either
Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the two sides remain "not close" as talks continue, with no guarantee a deal gets done before the season starts or even during it.
Former NFL general manager Mike Tannenbaum offered a contrarian read on ESPN's "Get Up," suggesting patience could actually benefit both sides.
"If I'm C.J. Stroud, if that number doesn't begin with a six, meaning $60 million or more, why should I take less than all these other young, emerging quarterbacks?" Tannenbaum said. "His body of work probably doesn't justify it yet. If I'm him, I'm probably going to bet on myself this year."

Tannenbaum also pointed out Houston's built-in leverage, noting the Texans already exercised Stroud's fifth-year option for 2027 and could fall back on the franchise tag if no long-term deal materializes.
He added that Houston's championship-caliber defense gives the team a path to contend even without paying top-market money at quarterback.
A $70 million salary would consume roughly 21.6 percent of Houston's projected 2027 salary cap, per Spotrac, compared to Mahomes' deal sitting at 20.9 percent of Kansas City's current cap.
Stroud enters his fourth season having thrown for 3,041 yards with a 19-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio and a 92.9 passer rating last season, solid production, but not the kind that typically forces a team's hand at record-setting numbers.
Stroud himself has stood firm on his value throughout the offseason, previously stating he believes he's held up his end of the bargain. With talks expected to continue into the season, the gap between the two sides remains the story to watch in Houston.
