Texans Make Trade Calls On AFC Rival's Receiver

The Houston Texans didn't wait long to start searching for a replacement after losing Jayden Higgins for the season.

Per KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson, Houston has made "exploratory trade calls" around the league, with New England Patriots receiver Kayshon Boutte among the names they've asked about.

Per the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander, those calls have so far been about gauging price rather than finalizing anything.

Sources have described the Texans' outreach as inquiries into what it would cost to acquire available receivers, and New England's price for Boutte came back higher than Houston is currently willing to pay.

The Fit Makes Sense On Paper

The urgency traces to Tuesday's news that Higgins tore his ACL in a joint practice with the Raiders and will miss the entire season, just one year after a promising rookie campaign that produced 41 catches for 525 yards and six touchdowns.

That leaves a Houston receiver room built around Nico Collins thinner than the Texans would like, with Jaylin Noel still working back from hamstring and pinkie injuries and Tank Dell continuing a long recovery from a serious 2024 knee injury.

Boutte, a former sixth-round pick, has emerged as one of Drake Maye's more productive downfield targets over the past two seasons in New England, catching a touchdown against Houston in last January's AFC Divisional Round matchup.

Why It Might Not Happen

Per Wilson, the Texans ideally want a bigger receiver if they add outside help, and Boutte doesn't necessarily check that box. New England is reportedly hoping to get a third-round pick in any deal, a price that would represent strong value for a receiver-needy team if Houston is willing to meet it.

New England added three-time All-Pro A.J. Brown and veteran Romeo Doubs this offseason, and Boutte has been described in team circles as a candidate to be the last receiver to make New England's 53-man roster.

For his part, Boutte has said he wants to stay. "I want to be in New England for the rest of my career, I would say," Boutte told WBZ's Dan Roche. "I enjoy it out here. Been here three years. Every day I'm here. I call this home. This is my new home. Grew up in Louisiana. Stayed there 20 years, but now, Boston is my life."

He's since kept a lower profile on the subject, telling reporters this week he's "just blocking out the noise."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted Texans GM Nick Caserio's track record makes a deal plausible regardless of the price gap. "He is in the handful of GMs who likes to make a move, and never has been afraid to kind of stick his neck out," Rapoport said. "They do have a need here."
