NFL Trade Rumors: Buffalo Bills Running Back James Cook Unhappy With Contract

The Buffalo Bills are having problems with one of their most promising young players. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, two-time Pro Bowl running back James Cook was not present for the start of the Bills' voluntary offseason program and is pursuing a new contract.

Cook is in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to earn a modest $5.346 million this season. Running backs have a notoriously short shelf life, so securing his future while his value is at its peak makes sense for the 25-year-old.

Given Cook's production through 49 games (3521 yards from scrimmage and 27 total touchdowns), he's likely looking for a deal that would make him one of the highest-paid running backs in the league.

Philadelphia Eagles superstar Saquon Barkley recently signed a two-year, $41.2 million extension that made him the league's highest-paid back, but that contract is well out of reach for Cook. Barkley's 125.3 rushing yards per game last season nearly doubled Cook's 63.1.

At best, Cook should hope to land a deal somewhere in the range of Josh Jacobs' four-year, $48 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders and Jonathan Taylor's three-year, $42 million pact with the Indianapolis Colts. Both those players are former All-Pros and have demonstrated significantly higher ceilings than Cook, but Cook has age and durability working in his favor.

Cook has to be careful not to overplay his hand, particularly with the NFL Draft approaching. His status on the team could be more tenuous than he believes; The Bills could decide he's expendable and sniff around for a cheaper alternative in the first or second round this week.

If the Bills decide to play hardball, Cook could become an intriguing trade candidate for a team with a need at running back and cap space to spare. The Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Chargers, and Jacksonville Jaguars could all make sense, particularly if he could be had for a mid-round pick.
