The Steelers have already made two major transactions at wide receiver this offseason. They acquired Seattle Seahawks veteran D.K. Metcalf prior to the 2025 NFL Draft, and traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month.
The Steelers are clearly still in the market for a veteran pass catcher. They neglected to draft a wide receiver, and they've reportedly had their eye on New York Jets wide receiver Allan Lazard.
Olave has been a promising and ascendant young star for the Saints in his short career, averaging 65.8 receiving yards per game over his 39 appearances. At only 24 years old, his best years should almost certainly be ahead of him.
That's assuming Olave can stay healthy. Unfortunately, head injuries have become a trend for him: He missed nine total games in 2024 due primarily to a pair of concussions. They were his third and fourth confirmed concussions since entering the league in 2022.
Targeting Olave is a savvy move by the Steelers. He's a young, cheap star coming off an alarming season, and his market value could be lower than ever. The Saints are also in a nebulous place right now due to the sudden retirement of quarterback Derek Carr and the arrival of new head coach Kellen Moore.
Still, landing Olave is easier said than done. He still has two years left on his rookie contract at reasonable rates, and he has excelled in his young career, even with inconsistent quarterback play. The Steelers would likely have to wow the Saints to have a chance at him, and that could mean offering as much as a first-round pick.
Ultimately, the Steelers need to do something dramatic to get out of purgatory. Four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers has flirted with the Steelers but is also reportedly mulling retirement. Coaxing him into signing for a year is the Steelers' best option. Exploring the wide receiver market and tailoring the roster to Rodgers' needs makes sense. Landing a star like Olave could go a long way.
