NFL Trade Rumors: Steelers Eyeing George Pickens Replacement

New York Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard runs with the ball during 2025 game.

As the Pittsburgh Steelers wait on Aaron Rodgers’ decision about the 2025 season, they’re reportedly preparing to bring in a familiar face to the veteran quarterback—wide receiver Allen Lazard.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Lazard is “in play” to be traded from the New York Jets to the Steelers, following Pittsburgh’s trade of George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this week.

A Trusted Rodgers Target with Ties to Pittsburgh’s Plans

Lazard has been closely linked to Rodgers since their days in Green Bay and later with the New York Jets. While his production dipped in New York—where he caught 37 passes for 530 yards and six touchdowns in 2024—his value to Rodgers remains high.

“Rodgers completely and totally trusts him,” Florio noted. “And Lazard, for whatever reason, performs much better with Rodgers than he does without him.” That kind of chemistry could prove crucial if Rodgers ultimately signs with the Steelers, who are clearly setting the table for his arrival.

After trading Pickens, Pittsburgh needs a No. 2 option behind DK Metcalf, and Lazard’s adjusted salary—down to $2.5 million for 2025—makes him a cost-effective target. His reduced contract adds to the intrigue, particularly for a team trying to balance cap management with an urgent need to retool the receiving corps. Fans and media have taken notice, with some jokingly blaming Rodgers for reshaping yet another team around his preferences.

Lazard's Fit Depends on Rodgers’ Decision

While speculation about Lazard intensifies, the bigger question remains: will Rodgers commit to playing in 2025, and will it be with the Steelers?

Pittsburgh seems to be acting like the answer is yes, as they continue to build a roster that mirrors Rodgers’ preferences—starting with Lazard. If a deal materializes, it would be Lazard’s third time joining a Rodgers-led offense, further fueling expectations that the four-time MVP is destined for the black and gold.
