NFL Transactions: San Francisco 49ers Extend Quarterback Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

Mr. Irrelevant no more. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with quarterback Brock Purdy, the 262nd overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, on a five-year, $265 million extension.

Purdy was set to enter the final year of his threadbare rookie contract, which paid him a minuscule $2,637,012 over his first three years in the league. He became extension-eligible for the first time in his career this offseason, and the 49ers immediately began negotiations. General manager John Lynch noted earlier this month that talks were progressing well.

Continuing the marriage between the 49ers and Purdy was an obvious decision for both sides. He has amassed a 23-13 record as a starter while posting incredibly efficient averages in passing yards per game (238.0) and net yards per passing attempt (8.01). The 49ers even made the Super Bowl following the 2023 season, narrowly losing 25-22 to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime.

As excellent as Purdy has been through three seasons, the fact that he was the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft still must have lingered in his market evaluation. The $53 million annual average he achieved on his new deal falls well short of some of the recent mega deals signed by quarterbacks.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott currently holds the title of the league's highest-paid quarterback thanks to his four-year, $240 million extension signed prior to last season. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, and Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love have all achieved a $55 million per year average. Burrow, Lawrence, and Allen also achieved significantly greater total guarantees than Purdy's $181 million.

Purdy's deal falls more in line with Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff's four-year, $212 million contract and Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's $212.4 million extension, but even that may overstate its value. Those deals were signed in 2024, when the league-wide salary cap was $23.8 million lower than it is now.

Clearly, Purdy has signed a deal that concedes he isn't considered one of the league's most valuable quarterbacks. Ultimately, that could benefit the 49ers. If Purdy continues to exceed expectations, the 49ers could have a relative bargain at the league's most important position for years to come.
