Top 3 Free Agent Landing Spots For Nick Chubb

Houston Texans running back Nick Chubb runs for a touchdown during 2025 game.

Nick Chubb spent 2025 with the Houston Texans on a one-year, $2.5 million deal, rushed for 506 yards and three touchdowns across 15 games, and watched his role diminish as Woody Marks pushed into a larger share of the backfield down the stretch.

The Texans signed David Montgomery in March, closing the door on a return.

Chubb is a free agent at 31 years old, carrying the damage from his 2023 knee injury that tore his MCL, damaged his meniscus, and tore his medial capsule.

He is no longer the same explosive runner who averaged over five yards per carry in every season from 2019 through 2022.

He is still a capable short-yardage presence, a four-time Pro Bowler with 1,340 career carries for 6,843 yards and 56 touchdowns in Cleveland alone, and a veteran whose character and leadership have never been questioned.

Three teams stand out as the most logical fits.

Cleveland Browns

The emotional pull and the organizational need overlap in Cleveland.

The Browns built their backfield around Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson, but Judkins dislocated his ankle and fractured his fibula in Week 16 of his rookie season and is targeting training camp as his return date.

Radio host Adam Gerstenhaber floated a Chubb reunion on The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show, suggesting bringing him back as a veteran third back who knows his role.

The Browns gave Chubb a respectful farewell statement when they moved on and have not publicly ruled out a reunion.

Dallas Cowboys

ESPN named the Cowboys as Chubb's best landing spot in a free agency exercise published in May.

Dallas has Javonte Williams leading the backfield with Jaydon Blue, Phil Mafah, and Malik Davis behind him, but lacks a proven short-yardage specialist at the goal line.

Landing in Dallas would not pressure Chubb to be a featured back the way Houston's situation did when Joe Mixon was unavailable, making it a low-stakes fit for a veteran at this stage of his career.

His power running style complements rather than competes with what Williams and Blue bring to the backfield.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills are another team worth monitoring, with Chubb potentially competing for a depth role.

Buffalo's backfield situation has shifted following offseason moves, and the Bills' championship window ambitions make adding a proven veteran at the goal line at a veteran minimum an easy decision if Chubb is willing.

It is the most uncertain of the three fits from a guaranteed roster spot standpoint, but Buffalo's win-now mentality makes the conversation very possible.
