NFL Trades: San Francisco 49ers Acquire Philadelphia Eagles Edge Rusher Bryce Huff

Bryce Huff, Philadelphia Eagles
The San Francisco 49ers have traded for a shiny new pass rusher. The 49ers have officially acquired edge rusher Bryce Huff from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a mid-round pick. According to CBS's Jonathan Jones, the 49ers are sending the Eagles a 2026 fifth-round pick that can be upgraded to a fourth-round pick if Huff meets certain performance criteria.

Huff is a former undrafted free agent who clawed his way to prominence as a situational pass rusher with the New York Jets. He peaked in 2023 with 10.0 sacks on only 480 defensive snaps. That breakout season earned him a three-year, $51 million contract with the Eagles prior to the 2024 season.

Huff wasn't nearly as productive in his one and only season with the Eagles, partly due to a lack of playing time. He logged a mere 2.5 sacks in the regular season and failed to register so much as a tackle across the Eagles' four postseason games.

Clearly, the 49ers are betting Huff will fare better in their system. They registered 36.0 sacks last season and lost veteran pass rusher Leonard Floyd in free agency, whose 8.5 sacks trailed only Nick Bosa's 9.0 for most on the team. Huff should already be familiar with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh's scheme: Saleh was Huff's head coach on the Jets from 2021 to 2024.

As for the Eagles, Huff becomes the fourth significant defensive lineman to leave the team this offseason. Long-time veteran Brandon Graham retired in March, defensive tackle Milton Williams joined the New England Patriots on an eye-popping four-year, $104 million deal, and edge rusher Josh Sweat signed with the Arizona Cardinals on a four-year, $76.4 million contract. Those four players accounted for 18.5 of the Eagles' 41.0 regular season sacks in 2024.

The Eagles' pass rush was arguably their biggest strength in last year's Super Bowl run. In four postseason games, they accounted for an excellent 16.0 sacks, and that ferocious pressure helped create eight forced fumbles and 13 takeaways. If the Eagles are going to maintain that level of havoc, they may need to do something drastic to make up for all the new holes in their roster.
