NFL Free Agency: Steelers & Familiar Wide Receiver Talking Deal

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Gabe Davis before 2024 game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue reshaping their offense with a fresh twist—former Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis is visiting the team this week, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Davis, 25, signed a three-year, $39 million deal with Jacksonville last offseason but appeared in just 10 games before a torn meniscus cut his season short. Released in May, he now finds himself a possible bargain target, likely signable for the veteran minimum.

A Cheap Flier with Big-Play Potential

Before his lost season in Jacksonville, Davis flashed big-play ability in Buffalo, averaging 16.2 yards per catch across four seasons. His best year came in 2022, posting 836 yards and seven touchdowns.

If healthy, he brings deep-threat upside to a Pittsburgh receiving corps that already features new additions DK Metcalf and Robert Woods. With George Pickens traded to Dallas, Davis could be a low-risk, high-reward addition for a team aiming to bolster depth and spacing on the outside.

QB Questions Continue: Rodgers or Rudolph?

Davis' visit comes as Pittsburgh waits on a decision from Aaron Rodgers, whose free-agent status still casts a shadow over the team’s quarterback plans. Mason Rudolph is currently penciled in as the starter, but a Rodgers signing would immediately reshape expectations.

Meanwhile, trade talks for Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith appear to have stalled, despite initial interest. With minicamp around the corner, the Steelers are still fine-tuning their offensive pieces—Davis may be next in line if he checks out medically and meshes with the team’s new direction.
