NFL Transactions: Aaron Rodgers Signing With Pittsburgh Steelers

Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets

The biggest drama of the 2025 offseason appears to be coming to a close. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, former New York Jets and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has informed the Pittsburgh Steelers that he intends to sign with the team prior to next week's minicamp.

Rodgers first met with the Steelers in March, but has been linked to the team ever since the Jets released him earlier this offseason. The parameters of Rodgers' contract have yet to be revealed, but the Steelers currently sport nearly $32 million in cap space, per overthecap.

Rodgers' signing is a long time coming. He batted his eyes at the Minnesota Vikings and even flirted with retirement, but the Steelers were always his most logical fit. They've made the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, even with often middling quarterback play. They also have a credible WR1 in the recently acquired D.K. Metcalf, and they're reportedly sniffing around adding a star pass catcher via trade.

What does it mean for the Steelers?

Now 41 years old, Rodgers isn't nearly the quarterback he once was. The four-time MVP has been thoroughly ineffectual over his past three seasons, amassing a 14-21 record while averaging a subpar 5.85 net yards per passing attempt and a minuscule 216.9 passing yards per game.

Still, the Steelers' offense hasn't exactly lit the world on fire in recent years. Since Ben Roethlisberger retired following the 2021 season, the Steelers have finished 26th, 28th, and 16th in points scored, due in large part to their struggles at quarterback.

Ultimately, Rodgers doesn't need to be great to help the Steelers; Even mediocrity might be enough to provide an upgrade to Pittsburgh's passing attack. If the Steelers can surround Rodgers with enough talent, they'll have a real chance to win their first playoff game since the 2016 postseason.
