Miami Dolphins Lose Running Back For Season After Injury

Miami Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison runs with the ball during 2025 preseason game.

The Miami Dolphins' backfield has taken a significant blow after veteran running back Alexander Mattison underwent season-ending neck surgery following an injury in the team's preseason game against the Chicago Bears

Mattison, who had signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins in the offseason, was expected to provide valuable depth and short-yardage production. He suffered the injury after catching a 21-yard pass, but despite some initial optimism, his condition worsened, leading to surgery. Fortunately, Mattison is expected to make a full recovery, but he will not return this season.

In response to the injury, the Dolphins signed former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Aaron Shampklin to help fill the void. Shampklin, who has limited NFL experience, rushed for 17 yards on six carries with the Steelers in 2024.

The 27-year-old will compete for snaps behind De'Von Achane and second-year back Jaylen Wright. Meanwhile, rookie Ollie Gordon II will also battle for a spot in Miami’s running back rotation. The loss of Mattison leaves Miami with limited depth at the position, and the team will likely continue evaluating other free-agent options, including veteran Jamaal Williams, to bolster their backfield.

Mattison’s departure leaves the Dolphins with significant questions at running back, especially with Achane expected to lead the charge. While Achane is poised for a breakout season, the team will need more from its remaining backs to stay competitive.
