NFL Rumors: Bengals Facing Mounting Pressure To Make QB Trade

New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston reacts before 2025 game.

The Cincinnati Bengals’ 2025 season has taken a dramatic turn since Joe Burrow went down in Week 2 with a turf toe injury that will sideline him for months.

Backup Jake Browning has been unable to keep the offense afloat, with the Bengals putting up historically poor numbers in back-to-back games. In consecutive starts, the offense has failed to reach 175 total yards for the first time since 1971, and the team has been outscored 76-13 over its last two contests.

At 2-2, the Bengals remain alive in the playoff picture, but their current trajectory makes it clear: sticking with Browning could cost them the season.

Trade Market Options Emerge

The urgency has fueled a wave of quarterback trade speculation. Atlanta Falcons veteran Kirk Cousins has been floated as a potential fit after being benched for rookie Michael Penix Jr.

Despite his no-trade clause, Cousins would almost certainly waive it for a playoff-caliber roster like Cincinnati. His $27.5 million salary is a steep obstacle, but his experience would give the Bengals the most immediate upgrade.

The New York Giants could also be a source of help, with both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston buried on the depth chart behind rookie starter Jaxson Dart.

Wilson, who has been benched multiple times in recent years, remains a polarizing option. While his long-ball ability could complement Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, his declining production has made many wonder if he’s truly an upgrade over Browning.

Winston, meanwhile, offers familiarity with the AFC North after a stint with the Cleveland Browns, along with a much friendlier contract.

An Old Friend and a Familiar Dilemma

Beyond those names, the Bengals could explore a reunion with Andy Dalton, now with the Carolina Panthers

Dalton, who led Cincinnati to five straight playoff berths earlier in his career, still has something left in the tank and would come at a low cost. Another speculative option is Jimmy Garoppolo of the Los Angeles Rams, who brings postseason experience but may not be available if Matthew Stafford’s health is in doubt.

The trade deadline looms just over a month away, leaving the Bengals with a decision to make: ride out the storm with Browning, or swing a deal for a veteran to try and salvage the season.
