NFL Rumors: Recently Cut Jabrill Peppers Linked To Prime Landing Spot

New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers runs off the field during 2024 game.

The Las Vegas Raiders’ secondary remains one of their biggest question marks entering Week 1, and a surprising name is now being floated as a solution.

Veteran safety Jabrill Peppers, who was released by the New England Patriots just days before the season opener, is being urged as a potential fit for the Raiders’ defense. The 29-year-old could give Las Vegas both versatility and much-needed stability at safety, freeing up Jeremy Chinn to play more nickel corner.

Raiders Linked to Former Patriots Safety Jabrill Peppers

Peppers brings a strong résumé of production, including a standout 2020 season under current Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, when he recorded 91 tackles, 11 pass breakups, and eight tackles for loss with the New York Giants

Even in recent years, Peppers has graded highly in coverage and run defense, proving he can still be an effective playmaker when healthy. Last season, he registered 40 tackles, a forced fumble, and an interception in limited action. The biggest concern is his injury history, but when on the field, he has consistently been one of the better coverage safeties available.

For the Raiders, the timing makes sense. With Lonnie Johnson Jr. sidelined for at least a month and uncertainty surrounding slot corner Darnay Holmes, Peppers would bring in immediate depth and experience.

His connection to Graham’s scheme could accelerate his adjustment in Las Vegas, and his presence would allow Chinn to thrive in a nickel role where he’s historically been more effective. Given the Raiders’ $26 million in available cap space, cost shouldn’t be an obstacle.

While not a superstar addition, Peppers could be exactly the kind of smart veteran signing Pete Carroll and the front office have been searching for.
