TRADE: Eagles Acquire Former 1st-Rounder From Dolphins

Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips celebrates sack during 2024 game.

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Miami Dolphins pass rusher Jaelan Phillips for a 2026 third-round pick, reuniting Phillips with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and capping a spree that already added cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Michael Carter II.

For a defense sitting near the bottom third in sacks and total defense, this is a swing for both now and later.

Why the Eagles wanted Jaelan Phillips

Phillips brings burst, length, and real win rate to an edge room that has been in flux. He owns three sacks this season and ranks among linebackers in pass rush win rate and pressure rate, the kind of underlying metrics Philly covets.

He posted 6.5 sacks in eight games under Fangio in 2023, and the familiarity should shorten any learning curve. With Brandon Graham returning, Nolan Smith working back from injury, and depth pieces like Joshua Uche and Patrick Johnson in the mix, Phillips slots in as a movable chess piece on early downs and a closer on passing downs.

Contract, risk, and the roster ripple

The price point is a late Day 2 pick, which is sensible value for a 26-year-old former first-rounder on a fifth-year option.

The medical file is the caution: an Achilles tear in 2023 and an ACL in 2024 cost him time. If he stays on the field, the Eagles could push to extend rather than rent, especially with few edge rushers under contract beyond 2025.
