Cincinnati Bengals Cut Veteran Linebacker & Team Captain

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Germaine Pratt celebrates during 2025 game.

Germaine Pratt's time in Cincinnati is over.

The Bengals are releasing the veteran linebacker and team captain just before the start of mandatory minicamp, saving $5.6 million in cap space in the process. The move comes after Pratt requested a trade earlier in the offseason, frustrated by the team's defensive overhaul and the firing of longtime coordinator Lou Anarumo.

With no trade materializing and a fresh wave of young linebackers arriving via the draft, the Bengals chose to part ways with one of their most consistent defenders.

Pratt Leaves Behind a Productive Legacy in Cincinnati

A third-round pick in 2019, Pratt developed into a staple of the Bengals' defense, starting 88 of 96 games and delivering one of the franchise’s most memorable moments—a goal-line interception to seal their first playoff win in 31 years.

He’s coming off his best season yet, finishing 2024 ranked ninth in the league with 143 tackles, plus two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two recoveries. Despite those stats and his leadership as a captain, the Bengals have opted to reshape their defense, already indicating a shift by drafting linebackers Demetrius Knight Jr. and Barrett Carter.

What’s Next for Pratt and the Bengals Defense?

With Pratt now headed to free agency, expect teams in need of veteran linebacker depth—possibly the Indianapolis Colts under his former coordinator—to show immediate interest. As for Cincinnati, this move adds to the growing uncertainty on defense.

Star pass rusher Trey Hendrickson remains in a contract standoff, and the unit already ranked among the league’s worst in yards allowed last year. Clearing cap space might be a step toward retooling, but replacing a leader like Pratt will be no small task.
