NFL Rumors: 5 Notable Players Could Be Cut This Summer

Jacksonville Jaguars running back runs the ball during 2024 game.

The NFL offseason always brings a few shocking roster moves, and according to Bleacher Report's Alex Kay, more are on the way.

With teams needing to trim rosters from 90 to 53 players by August 26, several recognizable names are on shaky ground.

Travis Etienne, Antonio Gibson Among RBs at Risk

Once a breakout star for Jacksonville, Travis Etienne Jr. has seen his production fall off a cliff. He managed just 558 rushing yards in 2024 and faces a crowded Jaguars backfield that includes Tank Bigsby and two rookies. With a new regime in town and no ties to the former first-round pick, Etienne’s time in Duval may be coming to an end.

Antonio Gibson is another back with uncertain footing. Now in New England, Gibson logged just 538 scrimmage yards last year and sits behind Rhamondre Stevenson on the depth chart. With rookie TreVeyon Henderson now in the mix, Gibson’s $2.33 million cap savings could be too tempting for the Patriots to pass up.

Veterans Joe Flacco, Aidan O’Connell, and D’Andre Swift on the Bubble

Joe Flacco’s comeback run in Cleveland earned him respect, but it may not earn him a roster spot. The Browns suddenly have a four-way quarterback competition, including rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. If Flacco doesn’t win the job, he’s unlikely to be kept as a 40-year-old backup with limited upside.

Meanwhile, in Las Vegas, Aidan O’Connell looks like the odd man out after the Raiders brought in Geno Smith and drafted Cam Miller. Despite flashes as a rookie, O’Connell hasn’t convinced new head coach Pete Carroll he’s worth developing.

Then there’s D’Andre Swift, who followed up his 1,000-yard season with a disappointing campaign in Chicago. With Kyle Monangai now pushing for snaps and Swift carrying a hefty cap hit, the Chicago Bears could try to trade or cut bait if he underwhelms in camp.

Mike Williams Fighting for a Spot in Crowded Chargers WR Room

After bouncing between teams in 2024, Mike Williams is back with the Los Angeles Chargers on a cheap deal, but don’t let the low cost fool you. The 30-year-old wideout hasn’t topped 1,000 yards since 2021 and faces stiff competition from young targets like Ladd McConkey and incoming rookies Tre Harris and Keandre Lambert-Smith. Unless he flashes vintage form in camp, Williams may be the odd man out.
